Trainer and Jockey.
Michael served his apprenticeship under Reg Hollinshead from 1973 to 1978, he turned professional in 1979 and enjoyed a successful career in the saddle with over 600 winners to his name and rode for some of the most high profile owners and trainers during that time including Sir Michael Stoute, Luca Cumani, and the late Sir Henry Cecil. Michael won some major races during his riding career notably the Royal Hunt Cup, The Stewards Cup, The Lincoln Handicap, the William Hill Sprint, The Free handicap, and the November handicap to name a few, Michael also rode winners in numerous other countries and enjoyed successful winter stints in India, Malaysia, and Singapore. He also rode in the 1988 running of the Breeders Cup at Hollywood Park to add to his CV. He retired from race riding in 1998 bringing down the curtain on a riding career lasting 25 years.
Michael has enjoyed a successful training career to date with some notable successes including Credit Swap winning the 2010 Totesport Cambridgeshire handicap at Newmarket, and Fanunalter winning the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot. Michael has averaged a string of no more than 15 horses in training in his career to date and in the trainers championship of 2014 amassed 22 winners from only 79 runners earning a generous strike rate of 28% in the process. Michael has a good eye for a horse and has provided his loyal owners with plenty of success with relatively small budgets in comparison with some of the major training yards who enjoy the patronage of the big spending owners.
